As runners prepare to head to the Balla 10k this coming Saturday evening for what will be the fourth race in the 2011 Mayo AC C & C Cellular league details of the top 25 league positions after three races held have just been published. Timmy Glavey (Mayo AC) leads the mens’ league after three quality runs with 64 points closely followed by club mate Robert Malseed on 62pts having also run three races. While well positioned in joint third on 49pts having run two races each are Roger Barrett (Ballina AC) and Matt Bidwell (Galway City Harriers).

The Carramore race is a traditional 10k race ran over a fast flat rural one lap course. The Carramore 10k has been organised by Christy Heneghan and his local committee for the past 10 years or so. There is also a four mile walk over a separate course. Both events start at 6pm on Saturday May 21 and both are in support of Mayo Roscommon Hospice. This is the second race in the 2011 Mayo AC Road Race League. Gerry Ryan, John Byrne, and Robert Malseed are previous Carramore 10k winners and Catherine Conway, Mary Gleeson, and Regina Casey have won the women's race.

Just a couple of years ago the first race of the year in Mayo was the Carramore 10k in May, and it signalled the start of Mayo AC's annual road league. How times have changed, and in tandem a surprising growth area races here, there, and everywhere have sprung up. But it is back to basics with the Carramore 10k which will suit all the Fit4Life groups as they test out their Spring into Summer programmes, in a hope of reducing times and improving endurance. Other athletes will want to build confidence with a fast time and see what the hard work done during the recent good weather produces.

The AAI National Masters Indoor Track and Field Championships take place this Sunday January 23 in the Nenagh indoor arena. Mayo AC will have a strong team heading down to the event and are confident of continuing the club’s good record of recent years in this championship. The Mayo team is made up of Tom Hunt, Robert Malseed, Pat Moran, Anne Murray, and Martin Peyton.

At the recent Louisburgh to Westport half marathon Mayo ACs top seed John Byrne won the event in 74:25. Byrne was followed by team mate Robert Malseed finishing in 76:35. The next Mayo AC athletes home in excellent times were Brendan Gill and David Conway. The first woman home with an outstanding run was Mayo AC’s Sarah Syron. Syron who was troubled with injury during the summer months put in a fantastic performance against very tough competition to come home in 1:41:09.

The Mayo AC ladies team have been rewarded for their good performances this year by being selected to take part in the 24th European road race inter club championships in Torres Vedras, Portugal. The event, which will take place on Sunday October 17 over a 15km course, will have top athletic clubs from all over the continent taking part. The Mayo AC team which will compete in the event will be finalised over the coming weeks.

This Sunday, August 22, Westport will host a 5k fun run and walk around the historic tourist town. The event is open to absolutely everyone of all abilities and will take place through the grounds of Westport House. The event starts at 4.30pm sharp at the North Mall, with registration taking place from 3.30pm in the same location. The course has been accurately measured, and is the ideal distance for families, walkers, Fit4Life members, and club runners. As part of the Westport Get Out There Adventure Festival, the Westport community, and Mayo Sports Partnership have come together to promote an Active Westport for all. Mayo AC have just announced the launch of their new website www.mayoac.com. The website will feature information on all aspects of the club’s activities and is a welcome addition as the club expands on all fronts. Club chairman Michael Mc Grath pointed out that, while the website has been online for some time, recently it has received a major revamp thanks mainly to the great work done by club website coordinators TJ Mc Hugh, Catherine Conway, and others.

It is all systems go for the Balla 10k which takes place this Saturday 24 at 7pm.

The ninth DecareDental/Claremorris five mile run and walk which took place recently was again a great success attracting competitors from all over the west of Ireland. The event, which was in aid of Mayo Cancer Support, was held in dry but windy conditions ensuring that personal best times for the five mile distance were hard to achieve. Pre-race favourite John Byrne finished strongly to take the men’s title in a time of 26.50, just six seconds ahead of team mate Robert Malseed, while TJ McHugh continued his recent good form coming home in third in 27.26. Roger Barrett finishing fourth in 27.34 was first of a number of Ballina AC runners who performed well on the evening.
